North Carolina Central University and Campbell University went back and forth in a competitive non-conference matchup on October 3 in Durham, with Campbell ultimately holding off the Eagles for a 38-31 victory.
NC Central quarterback Nelson Layne was active early, looking toward the end zone through the air while also making plays with his legs. Layne helped put points on the board for the Eagles when he dove into the end zone for a first-half touchdown.
Campbell quarterback Kamden Sixkiller answered for the Camels, reaching the end zone while facing pressure from NC Central linebacker Joshua Maxwell. Sixkiller remained a focal point of Campbell’s offense, but the Eagles’ defense found opportunities to disrupt him throughout the half.
NC Central defensive lineman Zarion Walters broke through the Campbell protection to sack Sixkiller, while defensive back Bubba Camp was in position to challenge for possession after Campbell wide receiver Jyron Waiters put the ball on the ground.
The Eagles also generated offense through wide receiver Tristan Stitt. Stitt made a catch against Campbell defender Jayvian Sickles before later beating the coverage again for a touchdown, helping NC Central stay within striking distance.
Both teams continued trading scoring opportunities as the game developed, with NC Central keeping pressure on Campbell throughout the contest. The Eagles received contributions from their offense and defense, but Campbell was able to withstand the challenge and preserve the lead.
When the final whistle sounded, the Camels walked away with a 38-31 win, ending a hard-fought afternoon in Durham with NC Central falling just one score short.
