Durham - Tiffany Murray has been named the new chief financial officer (CFO) for Durham County Government. She will join the organization on November 27, 2023.
The Finance Department maintains a centralized countywide system of financial accounting, planning, investments, reporting, and controls, for the nearly $900 million budget. The department also manages the County payroll and accounts payable functions while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Murray comes to the County with over 25 years of progressive public and private financial expertise. She currently serves as the Finance Director for Gaston County Government where she oversees operations including general accounting, payroll, purchasing, investments, financial reporting, and debt management. Her local government career began in Mecklenburg County Government in 2007, where she served in several different roles within the Finance Department. In 2014, she was hired by Wilson County Government to serve as the Financial Services Director where she managed the accounting, budget, and finance functions.
County Manager Dr. Kimberly J. Sowell shared, “After a national search, we are excited to identify a seasoned Chief Financial Officer that will continue a legacy of strong fiscal oversight and management of Durham County operations. Tiffany has a reputation for being an astute financial professional, transparent collaborator, and effective leader. She will be a tremendous asset to the organization.”
When asked about the role Tiffany stated, “I am excited about the opportunity to serve this great community while leading a phenomenal team. Murray is a North Carolina Certified Local Government Finance Officer. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and completed a Master of Business Administration from Pfeiffer University. Murray is an active member of the Government Finance Officers Association. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Government Finance Officer Association and the North Carolina Local Government Investment Association.
