FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C — Makai, a 12-year-old 7th grader from Fuquay-Varina, has advanced to the Top 15 in Russell Wilson's Youth Athlete of the Year competition, a national program that recognizes young athletes for making a difference both on and off the field. Top 10 finalists will be announced tonight at 8:00 PM.
Makai plays for a local club competing at the National 1 League level, one of the highest levels of youth club soccer in the country. Between practices, games, and travel with his team, he maintains straight-A honor roll grades and volunteers with local charities, a combination his family and community say sets him apart in the competition.
“I'm incredibly proud of how he juggles it all at such a young age,” said Janel Woodard, Makai's mother. “What amazes me most is that he's always looking for new ways to get involved and give back. He's a thoughtful, respectful kid, and our whole community would love to see him go all the way.”
The Youth Athlete of the Year competition is produced by Colossal in partnership with NFL quarterback Russell Wilson, and past winners have been featured in national campaigns, including advertising with 3BRAND appearing on CBS and in Sports Illustrated. Voting is open now and the public is encouraged to cast a vote for Makai.
Makai comes from a long lineage of Honduran soccer players. He enjoys being part of a team, working toward a common goal, and overcoming challenges together. One of his favorite parts of the game is the brotherhood he has built with his teammates through both the victories and the adversity. Most of all, he loves having fun while playing the sport he enjoys.
