VP Kamala Harris Makes Stop In Fayetteville

July 18th, Vice President Kamala Harris visited Westover High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Mayor Colvin spoke first, mentioning that the Biden administration has sent $200 million to Fayetteville and Cumberland County. The mayor discussed the investments during the pandemic in families retaining their homes, water, and electric buses, and the 16 million dollar investment in HBCUs. He also touched on elements of Project 2025 and received a loud boo from the crowd. 

State Senator Val Applewood spoke next, energizing the crowd and highlighting how the current administration has supported the robust veteran community in Fayetteville and surrounding areas. State Senator Applewood also spoke on the PAC Act and the toxic exposure veterans have been exposed to from burn pits, along with veteran rights and reproductive opportunities through the VA. 

US Army veteran Scott Peoples shared too, mentioning he was a former republican voter. He elaborated that Trump didn’t want to visit veteran graves because it might mess up his hair. He shared the sentiments of former President Ronald Reagan, “I didn’t leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left me.” 

Gabriella Johns from the North Carolina Democratic coordinating campaign was next to speak and thanked the volunteers. She emphasized that every single vote will indeed count and ran down the issues on the line. The gym chanted “Four more years” as Gabby encouraged the crowd to continue to help by knocking on doors and making phone calls. 

The crowd was thrilled when Governor Roy Cooper energetically hit the stage and thanked the crowd for caring about the future of our country. He mentioned that this was Vice President Kamala Harris’s 15th trip to North Carolina. He also spoke about how they’ve been working together for many years both serving as the respective state’s attorney general. 

Vice President Kamala Harris was poised and proud speaking to, “Skill, discipline, dedication, and love of country.” At 110 days out, she was in every way articulating the wins of the administration. Here’s the thing she outlined, “If you claim to stand for unity, you need to do more than just use the word. You cannot claim you stand for unity if you deprive whole groups of Americans of dignity. You cannot claim to be for unity if you threaten to terminate the US Constitution.” 

She spoke on JD Vance and how what was most compelling was what he did not mention at the Republican National Convention. She emphasized, he did not speak about Project 2025 and that we are too busy watching what you’re doing to hear what you’re saying. Vice President Harris shared that five million Americans received student loan forgiveness and that Trump tried more than 60 times to repeal Affordable Care Act. VP Harris doubled down that healthcare should be a right and not a privilege.

On several occasions reminding us that this is, “The most existential consequential election,” and now there is even more to unpack with President Joe Biden stepping down as a nominee. President Biden’s initial comments mention Vice President Harris by thanking her for her service. He immediately endorsed Vice President Harris on social media, mentioning he will have more comments in the coming days. Only time will tell. 

That Thursday afternoon in Fayetteville, Vice President Harris asked, “What kind of country do we want to live in? A county of freedom, compassion, and the rule of law? We each have the power to answer this question.” Vice President Harris possesses the presidential stature, the experience, and the know how to run the United States of America.
