One of Raleigh’s oldest serving African-American churches recently recognized one of the church’s former pastors by renaming one of its buildings with his name.

Members of Martin Street Baptist Church recently held a ceremony honoring the church’s Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Charles T. Bullock, by officially renaming the church’s Family Life Center which was constructed during his tenure.

Dr. Bullock was joined by his family, friends and clergy from across North Carolina to celebrate the honor. Bullock, a native of Granville County, served as Senior Pastor of Martin Street Baptist Church for 17 years, before retiring.

Prior to serving as pastor at Martin Street, Dr. Bullock served as pastor at St. James Missionary Baptist Church for almost two decades, and also served as President of the General State Baptist Convention of North Carolina.

In reflecting on receiving the honor, Dr. Bullock shared that renaming the building is just a small part of God’s plan.

“This Family Center is not about me, it's about God’s love and mercy. It’s about nurturing families and getting them an opportunity to be a part of the ministry of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ," said Dr. Bullock.

The Family Life Center officially opened in 2007, and continues to be a valuable center for community engagement.
