In the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina, a beacon of hope shines brightly, offering support and fostering understanding. That beacon is “The Encouraging Place,” an organization dedicated to empowering women, uplifting families, and bridging racial divides. Recently, The Carolinian connected with Regelyn “Reggie” Edwards, the driving force behind this unique initiative, to learn more about its inspiring mission and impact.
“The Encouraging Place” is more than just a name; it’s a reflection of the organization’s core values.” Mrs. Reggie explained that the name arose organically from a women’s gathering. When asked what to call their fellowship, the women responded, “It’s a nurturing place, it’s a safe place, it’s an Encouraging Place.” And so, the name was born, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of support and empowerment that defines the organization.
The Encouraging Place focuses on three key ministries:
Women’s Outreach: This ministry provides a vital network for women through monthly meetings held across the city and an annual women’s conference. Open to all, these gatherings offer a space for connection, growth, and encouragement.
Pride for Parents Christmas Store: Recognizing the importance of dignity and choice, this initiative empowers low-income families to purchase Christmas gifts for their children at significantly reduced prices, rather than relying on handouts. “It’s a real joy seeing shoppers buy for their own children instead of getting a hand-out,” Mrs. Reggie remarked.
Racial Healing Outreach: This crucial ministry brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage in open and honest conversations about race and racism, fostering understanding and reconciliation.
The Encouraging Place operates on a refreshingly simple principle: “Y’all come.” “We provide a safe place for the gatherings, send out an invite, and people show up,” Mrs. Reggie shared. This open-door policy, combined with the organization’s long-standing presence in the community, has cultivated a dedicated following. The Encouraging Place has been a catalyst for profound personal transformations. Mrs. Reggie, a life coach, shared inspiring stories of women who, with newfound confidence, have become published authors and successful entrepreneurs. One woman, once unemployed and struggling with depression, discovered her talent for floral arrangements and now owns a thriving business.
The impact of the racial healing initiative is equally significant. Several participants, of diverse backgrounds, have been inspired to start their own groups, demonstrating a ripple effect of positive change. They have been able to work together and bring awareness to racial issues after attending meetings. Mrs. Reggie states that “several women Black & White have started groups of their own after learning and made aware of the dangers of racism. They finally “got it!” and were willing to work together to confess their own prejudice and bring people into an awareness of the issues and ask for a commitment to study and learn more.”
Racial healing is a journey fraught with challenges. Mrs. Reggie acknowledged that engaging the Black community has been particularly difficult. “I understand their reluctance,” she said. “What I hear most is ‘What difference will it make? We’ve been meeting and talking, but nothing changes.’” Despite this, she remains committed to extending invitations and fostering hope.
While most interactions have been positive, Mrs. Reggie has encountered resistance from a few individuals. She described how she handled these situations with grace and firmness, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all. She shared, “I’ve encountered only three white men who questioned the process and our discussions. One I showed the door, another 80-year-old white male continued to attend, and one just wanted to be heard. We let him have his say and told him the truth of the matter. He left grateful for the opportunity.”
Mrs. Reggie’s dedication to this work stems from a deep-seated desire to serve God and make a difference. “I began this work about 30 years ago,” she recalled. “I got there by seeking a place where God was at work that didn’t have a steeple on it.” Her unwavering faith sustains her, even in the face of a challenging political climate. “I believe God is greater, so I just commit to doing it His way...He always makes a way!”
For those inspired to embark on similar journeys, Mrs. Reggie offers sage advice, “One must be committed to the cause because there will be days when you will question yourself. I also think this is work that you are willing to do for free. Yep, you’ve got to be willing to do it even if no funds are coming in because fundraising is hard.”
The Encouraging Place stands as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and unwavering dedication. It is a shining example of how one person’s vision, fueled by faith and a commitment to others, can create a ripple effect of positive change, transforming individual lives and fostering a more just and equitable society.
