Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Medgar Evers

Medgar Wiley Evers was an American civil rights activist and soldier who was the NAACP’s first field secretary in Mississippi.

Dr. Michael Vinson, professor of History and Director of Africana Studies, kicked things off with a powerful keynote. Attendees also previewed a Mississippi Public Broadcasting documentary on Medgar Evers, followed by a riveting panel on “The Power of Words” featuring Joy Reid, Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr., and Ralph Eubanks.

The conversation continued with a Q&A and book signing, leading into a thought-provoking panel on “Journalism, Truth, and Civil Rights” with Nikole Hannah-Jones, Anne Wolfe, Howard Ballou, and Jerry Mitchell.

Workshops throughout the weekend tackled criminal justice reform, policy advocacy, philanthropy, and virtual storytelling.

Saturday’s program included a moving “Family Reflections” discussion with Reina Evers-Everette, Corrie Cockerel Carter, and Courtney Cockrell — plus a powerful performance by MADDRAMA

The event closed with a keynote on “Leadership and the Fight for Justice” by Stacey Abrams and Arekia Bennett-Scott
