Let her bake cake! The internet’s relentless barrage of criticism against Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and her new Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan,” is a stark reminder of the deeply ingrained biases that continue to plague our society. It’s not simply about a cooking show; it’s about the audacity of a Black woman claiming her space, unapologetically.
The vitriol directed at Meghan is not a new phenomenon. From the moment she entered the royal family, her Blackness became a lightning rod for hate. The same critical masses that seethed at her presence within the monarchy now find themselves equally incensed by her pursuit of personal joy and creative expression. But despite the relentless noise, she persists.
“With Love, Meghan” offers a glimpse into a side of Meghan rarely seen. It’s a show that celebrates friendship, creativity, and the simple pleasures of life. We see her trying new things, sharing her thoughts, and inviting us into her world. I find the show super cute and very chic. More importantly, it’s a testament to her resilience.
The real offense, it seems, lies not in the sun tea or fruit jams, but in the very act of Meghan enjoying her life. Her “leisure lifestyle,” as some have labeled it, has become a source of profound irritation for those who believe Black women should exist within a narrow, predetermined box. This is the core of the issue: the discomfort with Black luxury, the unspoken rule that Black joy must be earned, justified, and perpetually scrutinized.
Meghan’s passion is aspirational, not because of her title or wealth, but because of her unwavering commitment to her own happiness. She embodies the spirit of the contemporary Black woman creative: resilient, multifaceted, and unapologetically herself. She continues to nurture her friendships, explore beekeeping, candlemaking, and prioritize her well-being, regardless of the cacophony of negativity swirling around her.
The relentless criticism of “With Love, Meghan” isn’t about the quality of the show; it’s about the enduring struggle against the insidious belief that Black joy is somehow undeserved. It’s about the fact that some people are bothered by the fact that she is simply living her best life.
Meghan’s joy in the face of this hate is a powerful act of resistance. She is asserting her right to exist, to create, and to find peace alongside profit on her own terms. In doing so, she is offering a powerful lesson to Black women everywhere: that our happiness is not a privilege, but a birthright. Brew your tea and bake your cake!
