RALEIGH, NC – In a powerful display of community commitment, the Beta Lambda Sigma Philo Affiliate of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. visited Walnut Creek Elementary School this week to bolster the school's "Backpack Buddy" initiative. The donation event marked a significant milestone in the affiliate's ongoing efforts to support local youth and address food insecurity within the school system.
The Philos arrived with a caravan of supplies, delivering 500 bags of chips, 300 juice boxes, and 25 high-quality bookbags. These items are designated for the Backpack Buddy program, which provides students from food-insecure households with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to take home over weekends and school breaks when school meals are unavailable.
"Service is the heart of our organization. Seeing the direct impact these supplies will have on the students at Walnut Creek is exactly why the Philo Affiliate exists," stated a representative for the group.
Impact on the "Backpack Buddy" Initiative
The Backpack Buddy program relies heavily on community donations to sustain its reach. The addition of 500 snacks and 300 drinks ensures that the program can maintain its service levels through the coming months, while the 25 new bookbags provide essential tools for students to carry their schoolwork and food supplies with dignity.
Walnut Creek Elementary administrators expressed deep gratitude for the donation, noting that such contributions are vital to the holistic success of their students. "When a child's basic needs are met, they are better equipped to focus, learn, and excel in the classroom," said one school official.
