LAS VEGAS — Every summer, the NBA Summer League becomes a proving ground for players fighting to earn a roster spot and extend their professional careers. For former Winston-Salem State University standout Javonte Cooke, it has become another opportunity to prove that talent from historically Black colleges and universities belongs on basketball's biggest stage.
Cooke, who has continued to build his professional career through the NBA G League after being waived by an NBA team earlier this year, delivered another impressive Summer League performance, reminding scouts and front offices why he remains a player worth watching. His confidence and ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor reflected the determination that has defined his basketball journey since leaving Winston-Salem State.
While many Summer League participants are recent first-round draft picks, Cooke represents a different path to professional basketball. Undrafted players and G League veterans often use the annual showcase to compete for training camp invitations, two-way contracts and opportunities overseas. For Cooke, every possession is another chance to demonstrate he belongs at the next level.
