Gear 4 The Year

August 10, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Communities In Schools of Wake County continues to be a partner during this year’s 2023 Governor’s School Supply Drive. For the last five years, the NC Office of the Governor, State Employees’ Credit Union, and CIS Wake have collaborated to assist students as they prepare to go back to school.

CIS Wake will kick off its backpack distribution on Thursday, August 10 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Kentwood Learning Center located at 3924 Neeley Street in Raleigh. Activities for students include receiving their Gear 4 The Year, a hot dog party, music, and games.

The foundation for being successful is to be prepared, so our Gear 4 The Year overall campaign ensures that every student is prepared and ready to learn,” said LaToya Montague, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Wake County.

CIS Wake provides after-school opportunities for students at learning centers located in public housing communities. Certified teachers work individually and in groups with students, focusing on core subjects and homework. CIS Wake also provides opportunities and access to corporate and community partners. Further, each year CIS Wake continues to support students through summer academic camps. These annual camps are designed to eliminate unfinished learning (reading and math) as well as provide exciting STEM activities to enhance academic engagement. Students also spend time focusing on social and emotional learning to increase their success. Our after school program and summer academic camps are held in the communities where students live so that they can easily participate! CIS Wake provides certified teachers to lead project-based learning, engaging students throughout the day.

CIS Wake serves in six middle schools across the county. Success Coaches connect with students on their caseloads and facilitate case management by conducting a needs assessment with parents and brokering resources for basic needs for families (food, technology, internet, etc.), checking in with students to complete missing school assignments while focusing on their overall well-being. Success Coaches build relationships with students on their caseload.

Communities In Schools of Wake County surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
