SUMMARY:Ligon Building Advisory Council To Meet
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of concerns about the future of the J.W. Ligon Magnet Middle School Building\, located at 706 E. Lenoir Street in Raleigh\, NC \, a Ligon Advisory Council has been selected consisting of four J.W. Ligon High School Alumni\, two Ligon Middle School faculty members\, 1-2 Middle School parents\, and 1-2 Middle School current students. The council’s first scheduled meeting is on August 18th. \n During the Advisory Council meetings\, the Ligon Building’s current state will be reviewed\, compared to the new guidelines\, and construction costs for all possible scenarios will be evaluated. The Advisory Council is expected to give the full picture\, which reportedly would allow for a collective consensus where every voice is represented. \n Wake County Public Schools has said\, “We understand and respect the deep historic relevance the J.W. Ligon Building holds for many in our community. As we consider next steps\, we are committed to ensuring that those decisions are informed by a full understanding of both the buildings legacy and the community’s voices. One avenue that we will be looking into as this process moves forward is to explore opportunities for the site to receive official recognition and designation as a historical site. As we continue gathering feedback from the community\, plans for historical preservation and acknowledgement will evolve.” \n It has been suggested that a member of the Advisory Council provide updates after each meeting to keep everyone informed. LS3P\, the selected architects for the project\, will also be creating a project-specific website where updates will be posted for public access. \nBy Karl Cameron

SUMMARY:Fourth Ward Gospel Extravaganza
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 24\, 2025 | 4:00 – 7:00 PMA.J. Fletcher Opera Theater2 East South Street\, Raleigh\, NC \nFree and open to the public \nJoin us as we celebrate and commemorate the three churches\, businesses\, and the vibrant neighborhood of Raleigh’s Fourth Ward—lost to “urban renewal” in the 1960s and ’70s. \nFeaturing: \n\n\nLocal singers and church choirs \n\n\nGuest speaker Senator Dan Blue \n\n\nHistory of the Fourth Ward:With the growth of Hayti\, Cannon Lands\, and surrounding areas\, southwest Raleigh—known as the Fourth Ward—became a thriving community. In 1896\, 66% of its 3\,200 residents were Black\, the highest percentage among Raleigh’s four wards. From 1875 to 1900\, during a time when Raleigh had five gerrymandered wards\, the Fourth Ward consistently elected Black aldermen—making it a strong political force for over 25 years.
