DESCRIPTION:The Raleigh African American History tour begins inside the Black Friday Market 23 West Hargett St.\, the corner of Salisbury and W. Hargett. This is a walking tour. This tour will highlight the real story behind the African American influences on downtown Raleigh\nThere are stops at several landmarks\, where your guide will discuss the history and legacy of the African American population on the culture and economic influence on the city. This walking tour is not your typical African American history tour\, Instead it is a history tour that discusses some unmarked places of distinction that shaped and transformed the downtown Raleigh city center. You will learn the actual history of the sites we visit.\nThe tour route is about 1 mile long\, and the endpoint of the tour will be at the same place we start the Black Friday Market. In addition\, we will not be entering any of the buildings listed in this tour description.\nThere is plenty of free street parking on the weekends in the blocks surrounding the Black Friday Market.\nThe African American Tours are approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes long but may be slightly longer depending on the size and speed of the group. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the significance of Juneteenth and the celebration of freedom from slavery. We’ll read the children’s book “Juneteenth for Mazie” and visit the tenant house to learn about what freedom meant to the enslaved community at Oak View. Participants will create a take-home reminder by decorating their own Juneteenth flag. \nFree and open to all ages\, recommended for ages 4-8. Registration is required for all participants. \n\n\n\nStoryWalk at Oak View\nEvery day during park hours (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday\, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday) check out StoryWalk. \nStoryWalk® at Oak View features a new children’s book every month. StoryWalk® combines the pleasures of reading a children’s book while taking a nature walk. \nThroughout the month of June\, the StoryWalk will feature the children’s book “Opal Lee and What It Means to be Free: The True Story of the Grandmother of Juneteenth” by Alice Faye Duncan (author) and Keturah A. Bobo illustrator.) In addition\, the park will feature a special self-guided Juneteenth Freedom Stories walking trail\, featuring interpretive panels about the history of Juneteenth and the stories of how the enslaved community at Oak View experienced the transition from slavery to freedom. The display is located on the park’s brick walkways\, starting after the StoryWalk® and ending at the 1870s tenant house. \nThe park is a 19th-century historic farmstead\, with a mission to interpret North Carolina’s agricultural heritage and rural history via educational programs\, special events and exhibits. \nSeveral goats live at Historic Oak View County Park\, which makes it a unique destination in Wake County. \n \nHistoric Oak View County Park has a lot to explore\, including a Cotton Gin House\, a kitchen garden\, a cemetery\, a livestock barn\, a pecan grove\, a tenant house\, and more. There’s even a fishing pond — catch and release only. There are walking trails as well.

Meet members of the Battery B Second Regiment\, United States Colored Troops (USCT) Light Artillery Reenactors\, and discover the legacy of the USCT in the struggle for freedom and citizenship during the American Civil War. \nJuneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of slavery’s end in the United States. From its Galveston\, Texas\, origin in 1865\, African American Emancipation Day has become a federal holiday. Members of the USCT were present on that momentous June 19\, 1865\, day in Texas\, as well as at many key battles of the war. Over 200\,000 Black men and women responded to the Union’s call to arms\, leading President Abraham Lincoln to announce that\, “Without the military help of the black [sic] freedmen\, the war against the South could not have been won.”
