DESCRIPTION:Kono Gnaga Holds Second Triangle Event to Raise Awareness\nAbout the Importance and History of African Dance \nDurham\, NC – On Sunday\, August 20\, join Malian dancer Souleymane Solo Sana (Solo)\, Africa Unplugged\, and Living Arts Collective for a great day of music and traditional Malian dance workshops for kids and adults as they raise money for work with schools in Mali.  \nThis family event\, presented by US nonprofit Kono Gnaga\, starts at 3 pm with a dynamic performance from Africa Unplugged. This band uses traditional percussion instruments from West Africa in combination with guitars and bass to play traditional rhythms while drawing from influences across the world. Their creativity results in a funky\, soulful blues and dance music that keeps you moving as they tell stories from the old world and the new. Also on the agenda is a presentation about the important work Kono Gnaga is doing to promote its mission\, a kids dance class\, and a traditional Malian Dance Class with Solo leading.  \nSolo Sana\, a traditional dancer from Mali\, West Africa\, started Kono Gnaga with a mission to preserve the living heritage of Malian traditional dance and music through arts education to keep it alive for generations to come   Kono Gnaga works with partner schools in Mali to establish traditional dance programs in the schools and produce community festivals that help promote social cohesion and heritage-based development.  \nThe day starts at 3pm at the Living Arts Collective at 410 West Geer Street\, Durham\, North Carolina. The Africa Unplugged performance begins at 3:00pm\, 4:00 pm hosts a presentation on Kono Gnaga and its work. The Kids Dance Class is from 4:30 – 5 pm\, with the day finishing up with a 5:15 Traditional Malian Dance Class led by Solo.  \nAdmission for adults and children 13 and up is $ 25 in advance\, $30 at the door. Children 12 and under are $10 in advance\, and $15 at the door.  \nIf you are unable to attend\, please consider a donation or sponsoring a spot for someone in the community to attend. Donations include one event ticket\, which can be utilized or donated. Sponsorship start at $50 for a KG Fan Sponsor\, $100 for a KG Family Sponsor\, and $500 for a KG Superstar Sponsor. DESCRIPTION:Communities In Schools of Wake County continues to be a partner during this year’s 2023 Governor’s School Supply Drive. For the last five years\, the NC Office of the Governor\, State Employees’ Credit Union\, and CIS Wake have collaborated to assist students as they prepare to go back to school. \nCIS Wake will kick off its backpack distribution on Thursday\, August 10 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Kentwood Learning Center located at 3924 Neeley Street in Raleigh. Activities for students include receiving their Gear 4 The Year\, a hot dog party\, music\, and games. \n“The foundation for being successful is to be prepared\, so our Gear 4 The Year overall campaign ensures that every student is prepared and ready to learn\,” said LaToya Montague\, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Wake County. \nCIS Wake provides after-school opportunities for students at learning centers located in public housing communities. Certified teachers work individually and in groups with students\, focusing on core subjects and homework. CIS Wake also provides opportunities and access to corporate and community partners. Further\, each year CIS Wake continues to support students through summer academic camps. These annual camps are designed to eliminate unfinished learning (reading and math) as well as provide exciting STEM activities to enhance academic engagement. Students also spend time focusing on social and emotional learning to increase their success. Our after school program and summer academic camps are held in the communities where students live so that they can easily participate! CIS Wake provides certified teachers to lead project-based learning\, engaging students throughout the day. \nCIS Wake serves in six middle schools across the county. Success Coaches connect with students on their caseloads and facilitate case management by conducting a needs assessment with parents and brokering resources for basic needs for families (food\, technology\, internet\, etc.)\, checking in with students to complete missing school assignments while focusing on their overall well-being. This tour will highlight the real story behind the African American influences on downtown Raleigh\nThere are stops at several landmarks\, where your guide will discuss the history and legacy of the African American population on the culture and economic influence on the city. This walking tour is not your typical African American history tour\, Instead it is a history tour that discusses some unmarked places of distinction that shaped and transformed the downtown Raleigh city center. You will learn the actual history of the sites we visit.\nThe tour route is about 1 mile long\, and the endpoint of the tour will be at the same place we start the Black Friday Market. In addition\, we will not be entering any of the buildings listed in this tour description.\nThere is plenty of free street parking on the weekends in the blocks surrounding the Black Friday Market.\nThe African American Tours are approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes long but may be slightly longer depending on the size and speed of the group. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the significance of Juneteenth and the celebration of freedom from slavery. We’ll read the children’s book “Juneteenth for Mazie” and visit the tenant house to learn about what freedom meant to the enslaved community at Oak View. Participants will create a take-home reminder by decorating their own Juneteenth flag. \nFree and open to all ages\, recommended for ages 4-8. Registration is required for all participants. \n\n\n\nStoryWalk at Oak View\nEvery day during park hours (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday\, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday) check out StoryWalk. \nStoryWalk® at Oak View features a new children’s book every month. StoryWalk® combines the pleasures of reading a children’s book while taking a nature walk. \nThroughout the month of June\, the StoryWalk will feature the children’s book “Opal Lee and What It Means to be Free: The True Story of the Grandmother of Juneteenth” by Alice Faye Duncan (author) and Keturah A. Bobo illustrator.) In addition\, the park will feature a special self-guided Juneteenth Freedom Stories walking trail\, featuring interpretive panels about the history of Juneteenth and the stories of how the enslaved community at Oak View experienced the transition from slavery to freedom. The display is located on the park’s brick walkways\, starting after the StoryWalk® and ending at the 1870s tenant house. \nThe park is a 19th-century historic farmstead\, with a mission to interpret North Carolina’s agricultural heritage and rural history via educational programs\, special events and exhibits. \nSeveral goats live at Historic Oak View County Park\, which makes it a unique destination in Wake County. \n \nHistoric Oak View County Park has a lot to explore\, including a Cotton Gin House\, a kitchen garden\, a cemetery\, a livestock barn\, a pecan grove\, a tenant house\, and more. There’s even a fishing pond — catch and release only. There are walking trails as well.
