DESCRIPTION:​In the wake of concerns about the future of the J.W. Ligon Magnet Middle School Building\, located at 706 E. Lenoir Street in Raleigh\, NC \, a Ligon Advisory Council has been selected consisting of four J.W. Ligon High School Alumni\, two Ligon Middle School faculty members\, 1-2 Middle School parents\, and 1-2 Middle School current students. The council’s first scheduled meeting is on August 18th. \n ​During the Advisory Council meetings\, the Ligon Building’s current state will be reviewed\, compared to the new guidelines\, and construction costs for all possible scenarios will be evaluated. The Advisory Council is expected to give the full picture\, which reportedly would allow for a collective consensus where every voice is represented. \n ​Wake County Public Schools has said\, “We understand and respect the deep historic relevance the J.W. Ligon Building holds for many in our community. As we consider next steps\, we are committed to ensuring that those decisions are informed by a full understanding of both the buildings legacy and the community’s voices. One avenue that we will be looking into as this process moves forward is to explore opportunities for the site to receive official recognition and designation as a historical site. As we continue gathering feedback from the community\, plans for historical preservation and acknowledgement will evolve.” \n ​It has been suggested that a member of the Advisory Council provide updates after each meeting to keep everyone informed.
