SUMMARY:NC Official Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony on June 2
DESCRIPTION:Durham\, N.C. – In honor of the federally recognized holiday Juneteenth\, the third annual North Carolina Official Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony will take place on Monday\, June 2\, 2025\, outside the Durham County Courthouse (510 S. Dillard Street). The event is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.\, and the flag-raising will take place at approximately 12 p.m. \nThe NC Official Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony\, hosted by Spectacular Magazine\, the Triangle Cultural Awareness Foundation\, and Durham County Government\, is free and open to all. It is not just a public event but a community gathering. The Juneteenth Flag Raising at the Durham County Courthouse has become a tradition that marks the beginning of North Carolina’s month-long celebration of Black freedom and excellence. The event unites civic leaders\, cultural contributors\, and community members to honor the journey from enslavement to emancipation. \nThis year marks the fourth year since Durham County Government officially recognized Juneteenth as a County holiday. This ceremony is the third year Durham County Government has raised the Juneteenth flag\, symbolic of the nationwide celebration and the kick-off of the Annual 20th NC Juneteenth Celebration in Durham scheduled on Saturday\, June 21. \nThe nationally recognized Juneteenth holiday for 2025 is Thursday\, June 19. Most Durham County Government offices will close on that day in observance. \nDuring the event on June 2\, the Monford Port Marines will hoist the Juneteenth flag alongside Durham County Sheriff’s Honor Guards\, a symbolic act that carries the weight of history. The Monford Port Marines were the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Trained between 1942 and 1949 in segregated facilities at Montford Point in Jacksonville\, North Carolina\, more than 20\,000 Black Marines paved the way for military integration and civil rights progress. Their presence at this year’s ceremony connects Juneteenth to another critical chapter in the Black American freedom story. \nDurham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead\, Durham County Manager Claudia Hager\, and City of Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams will welcome attendees. Rod Carter\, anchor for CBS 17\, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. \nAttorney Larry Hall\, former Secretary of North Carolina’s Department of Military and Veteran Affairs\, will preside over “The Juneteenth Story” portion of the Ceremony. This portion will include the public reading of the three Freedom Documents (Emancipation Proclamation\, 13th Amendment\, General Order #3) by Durham City Manager Bo Ferguson\, Durham County Commissioner Wendy Jacobs\, and Sheriff Birkhead. \nThere will also be a musical performance by Dr. Charity Godfrey Davis. \nClosing remarks will be delivered by Phyllis Coley\, NC Juneteenth State Director under the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF)\, the organization responsible for legislation that culminated in Congress passing and President Joe Biden signing the Juneteenth National Independence Day Bill on June 17\, 2021. Continuing to provide proper context and narrative of Juneteenth National Independence Day is a primary objective of the NJOF. \nCommunity members and visitors will be able to view the official Juneteenth Flag flying from June 2-19 at the Durham County Courthouse\, leading up to the holiday’s annual celebrations across the country. \n“It is an honor to witness the Juneteenth flag rise over Durham — now for the third consecutive year – as part of our 20th Annual NC Juneteenth Celebration\,” said Coley. “This tradition holds deep cultural meaning for our community. I am especially grateful to the Durham County Government and the Durham County Sheriff’s Office for their continued support. Raising the flag on the first Monday in June gives us a moment to center our celebrations in remembrance\, pride\, and unity. It serves as a visual reminder of the resilience\, sacrifice\, and enduring spirit of Black Americans.” \nFor more information on the NC Juneteenth Celebration\, visit www.spectacularmag.com/juneteenth.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Storytime with Author Rashmi Shah
DESCRIPTION:Raleigh\, NC – May 20\, 2025 – North Carolina–based mindfulness coach\, leadership consultant\, and debut children’s author Rashmi Kumar Shah will be hosting a free family storytime event on Saturday\, May 31 at 10:30 AM at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh. The event is designed to be accessible\, uplifting\, and family-oriented. \n“Children today are facing so much change — socially\, emotionally\, and in their communities\,” Shah says.\n“I Found My Piece isn’t just a story. It’s a calming tool\, disguised as a bedtime book. SUMMARY:National Civil Rights Museum hosts virtual book talk with award-winning historian Crystal R. Sanders during Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:  \nMemphis\, TN\, Jan. 31\, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In honor of Black History Month\, the National Civil Rights Museum is proud to present a virtual book talk featuring award-winning historian Crystal R. Sanders\, author of A Forgotten Migration: Black Southerners\, Segregation Scholarships\, and the Debt Owed to Public HBCUs. The event\, scheduled for February 13 at 6:00 pm Central\, will provide a powerful discussion on the overlooked history of segregation scholarships and their lasting impact on Black higher education. \nThrough A Forgotten Migration\, Sanders sheds light on the little-known story of how\, under the pre–Brown v. Board of Education era\, Southern states circumvented integrating graduate programs by paying Black students to pursue higher education out of state. This practice not only imposed financial and emotional hardships on students but also perpetuated the systemic underfunding of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Sanders’ research highlights the resilience of these students and the broader consequences of educational segregation. \nThis marks Sanders’ second appearance in the museum’s Book Talk Series\, following her 2017 discussion of A Chance for Change: Head Start and Mississippi’s Black Freedom Struggle. The museum continues to foster important conversations that connect historical struggles with contemporary issues in education and civil rights. \n“We are thrilled to host Dr. Sanders once again and bring attention to this crucial aspect of American history\,” said Dr. Russ Wigginton\, President of the National Civil Rights Museum. “Her work continues to shed light on the enduring legacy of segregation and the long fight for educational equity.” \nCrystal R. Sanders\, an Associate Professor of African American Studies at Emory University\, is a leading historian specializing in African American history\, Black women’s history\, and the history of Black education. Her work has been widely recognized with numerous awards and fellowships\, and her scholarship continues to shape discussions on racial equity in education. \nThe online event is free and open to the public. Participating educators from Memphis Shelby County Schools (MSCS) who attend the entire book talk will receive professional development hours in PLZ for the completed book talk. \nRegistration is required to receive a link\, and participants can sign up or receive more information at civilrightsmuseum.org. \nAbout the National Civil Rights Museum\nThe NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM\, located at the historic Lorraine Motel where civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. was assassinated\, gives a comprehensive overview of the American Civil Rights Movement from slavery to the present. Since the Museum opened in 1991\, millions of visitors from around the world have come\, including more than 90\,000 student visits annually. The Museum is steadfast in its mission to chronicle the American civil rights movement and tell the story of the ongoing struggle for human rights.  It educates and serves as a catalyst to inspire action to create positive social change.

SUMMARY:A&T Arts Program Presents A Doll’s House
DESCRIPTION:North Carolina A&T State University’s Theatre Arts Program presents A Doll’s House\, written by Henrik Ibsen\, directed and adapted by guest director Dr. Asabi Howard; it confronts female empowerment and male domination issues that have made this play a controversial theatre classic since its premiere in 1879 \nA Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen premiered in 1879 in Norway at The Royal Danish Theatre. The play delves into the fate of a married woman\, Nora Helmer\, who\, at the time\, lacked opportunities for self-fulfillment in a male-dominated world. Despite Ibsen’s denial of writing a feminist play\, it sparked a significant sensation and caused a ‘storm of outraged controversy’ that transcended the theater to the world of newspapers and society\, highlighting the pressing issues of gender roles and societal expectations. \nUnder the expert guidance of guest director Dr. Asabi Howard\, who serves as the chairperson of the \nDepartment of Theatre and Dance at North Carolina Central University and is a graduate of the North Carolina A&T State University Theatre Arts Program\, the play’s themes and impact are dissected with academic rigor and insight. Dr. Asabi has reimagined Ibsen’s play as a story set in the 1960s\, a time of racial unrest\, as African American women challenged America to embrace justice and equality. \nAlthough their efforts were an external fight\, many internal battles for women’s personal freedom and liberation were going unheard\, as was Nora’s existence within her household. After a series of disturbing incidents\, Nora is utterly disillusioned with her husband\, Torvald whom she now sees as a fraud. She realizes that she is just a doll who he treats as an irresponsible woman whose role is to \nflatter and serve him. Finally\, when pushed up against the wall\, Nora makes an extraordinary\, shocking\, and life-changing decision that has made this play a controversial theatre classic since its premiere in 1879. \nPerformance Dates and Times: \nThursday\, October 24 @7:30 p.m. \nFriday\, October 25 @7:30 p.m. \nSaturday\, October 26 @3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. \nSunday\, October 27 @3:00 p.m.
